How to create an invoice online for free
Fill in your details, add line items, set your VAT rate and click Download PDF. Your invoice is generated entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded to any server. Need a withholding tax? Add a second tax line with a negative percentage.
Making Tax Digital (MTD) — what freelancers need to know
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's programme to move tax administration fully online. MTD for VAT has been mandatory since 2022 for all VAT-registered businesses. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) is being phased in from April 2026 for self-employed people with income over £50,000. The key requirement is keeping digital records with digital links — this generator's history panel and UBL XML export help you maintain those records without paid software.
What must a UK invoice include?
- A unique, sequential invoice number and issue date
- Your business name, address and VAT number (if VAT-registered)
- The client's name and address
- Description of goods or services, quantities and unit prices
- VAT rate and amount charged, total ex-VAT and total inc-VAT
- Payment terms and bank details (sort code / account or IBAN)
Frequently asked questions
Is this invoice generator really free? Yes — no watermark, no account needed, unlimited invoices.
Is the UBL XML valid for MTD? It follows UBL 2.1 / EN 16931, the standard accepted by HMRC-recognised bridging software. The XML itself is a digital record; for actual MTD VAT submissions you will still need HMRC-approved software or a bridging tool.
Is my data safe? Everything runs locally in your browser. Your data is saved only on your device.
Can I add VAT and a withholding at the same time? Yes. Use the VAT % field for VAT and add a second tax line with a negative percentage for the withholding.
