Making Tax Digital (MTD) — what freelancers need to know

Making Tax Digital is HMRC's programme to move tax administration fully online. MTD for VAT has been mandatory since 2022 for all VAT-registered businesses. MTD for Income Tax Self Assessment (ITSA) is being phased in from April 2026 for self-employed people with income over £50,000. The key requirement is keeping digital records with digital links — this generator's history panel and UBL XML export help you maintain those records without paid software.

🌍 Invoicing international clients? Multi-currency accounts can save you most of the conversion fees. See multi-currency business accounts →

Frequently asked questions

Is this invoice generator really free? Yes — no watermark, no account needed, unlimited invoices.

Is the UBL XML valid for MTD? It follows UBL 2.1 / EN 16931, the standard accepted by HMRC-recognised bridging software. The XML itself is a digital record; for actual MTD VAT submissions you will still need HMRC-approved software or a bridging tool.

Is my data safe? Everything runs locally in your browser. Your data is saved only on your device.

Can I add VAT and a withholding at the same time? Yes. Use the VAT % field for VAT and add a second tax line with a negative percentage for the withholding.
